Best Painting

Madison Heagy

Title: "Getting Ready"

Medium: Oil paint on canvas

Size: 36” x 48”

Artist Statement: I have practice and explored my art in the mediums of graphite, ink, acrylic, clay and more recently oil paints. I have recently found a love for oil painting and how generous this medium can be to an imperfect artist. The art projects that speak the most to me are ones that consider societal norms and standards, specifically around womanhood and queerness. I also really enjoy botanical art for the aesthetics and the organic shapes and designs.

Bio: Madison(she/her) is a 28-year-old nontraditional student from Tacoma, Washington. Besides enjoying making art, she enjoys spending time cuddling and relaxing with her puppy, 3 cats, and her wife. She anticipates to graduate from Clark College in fall quarter of 2022, and hopes to transfer to a university that will help her attain a degree in psychology and double major in women's studies, and work towards the goal of becoming a therapist.

Bio: Julia is a sophomore at Clark working towards finishing the prerequisites for the dental hygiene program. She has loved photography since she got her hands on her mother's tiny digital camera when she was 11. After getting her first dslr when she was 13 she has been shooting ever since.

Best Ceramic

Denise Ostlund

Title: “Untitled”

Medium: Slab built ceramic bowl with cutouts

Size: 8.5" round x 3.5" tall

Artist Statement: In my art, I gravitate toward natural, organic shapes and colors. I am drawn to the sea, be it the shapes of sea life, the colors of the coastline, or silhouettes on the water. I prefer hand building ceramics and especially enjoy how clay can be manipulated with various techniques. Printmaking is new to me and can be tricky, so I really appreciate the reward of that "keeper" print.

Bio: Looking to revive her rusty artistic skills, Denise Ostlund, found herself back at the Frosts Art Center at Clark College after twenty years - a time when she had been shifting from design & graphic arts, to oil painting, and also ceramics. After waiting for ceramics to be in person, she embraced both ceramics and printmaking in the Winter quarter of this year and is hooked. She is looking forward to expanding upon those skills in future classes.

Best Metals

Cody Redinger

Title: “Diver's Helmet Pendant and Chain”

Medium: Copper and Brass

Size: 59mm x 38mm x 1.5mm

Artist Statement: Creating art for me is releasing thoughts and feelings in a way that words just don't do justice. Common themes in my work include the human figure, surrealism, spirituality, and mortality. Often enough though, I'm just having fun with it and making something interesting to look at.

Bio: One of Cody's aspirations is to master as many art forms as he can. Most recently he has ventured into metal working in Clark's Metal Arts program.

Course: ART189, Metal Arts I

Best Graphic Design

Jennifer Hicks

Title: “Keep Your Mind in the Light”

Medium: Photomontage (Photoshop)

Size: 10"x 16"

Artist Statement: Color and composition are two of the main concepts that inspire me to create- whether that is with watercolors, oils, pens, colored pencils, or creating digital art. I love playing with color palettes, texture, and pattern and how that corelates with composition, beauty and everyday irony.

Bio: Jennie is Graphic Design major with a love for fine art, illustration and story telling. She hopes to one day be writing and illustrating children's books and designing patterns and illustrations that communicate joy, beauty, courage and hope to the world through a variety of mediums while acknowledging the most important medium one can speak through is how one chooses to live life!

Professor: Damien Gilley

Best Printmaking

Shannon Guo

Title: “Savannah”

Medium: Linocut Print with Speedball Water-Soluble Ink on Mulberry Paper

Size: 3.9" x 6.1"

Artist Statement: I was lucky to be introduced to printmaking this year. During the learning and making of these artworks, I gained many unexpected experiences. For example, various details correspond to different carving tools, or the thickness relationship between materials always affects the final printing effect. Sometimes I carved some tiny details with great care, expecting the print to be delicate. However, the material has taught me that mastering them takes time. I think understanding the properties of these materials is also an interesting learning process. So, when I finished these prints, I found that each one of them had its own story and feeling, rather than just an idea.

Bio: Shannon Guo loves almost everything to do with art, so she sometimes experimented with both known and unknown art. Sophisticated, fashionable, unpretentious, simple, and humorous art styles are the scope of her consideration. She hopes to keep some creative passion in her future study and work because this is one of the most enjoyable moments in her life.

Megan Alexandra Fong Wilson

Title: “I miss you dad”

Medium: Oil on canvas

Size: 24” x 24”

Artist Statement: I just recently started using oil paint and bigger canvases to create my ideas in a larger picture. When I paint I always make something that is a part of me because I can express my feelings of that certain thing either with anger or beauty. I’ve had a pretty crazy life, and when I paint, I like to paint the good times to remind myself that not all my life was bad.

Bio: Megan Fong Wilson was born and raised in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. She moved to the United States in 2016 where she lived in South Lake Tahoe CA, and in December of 2019 moved to Vancouver WA.
